Especially ice, which is really only effective at containing swelling for the first 2 days. After that, you need to follow some gentle, but effective rehab techniques to strengthen the ankle and improve mobility again. It's a balance between rest and rehab. But, you don't just want to rest it, because that will not rebuild the strength needed to fully heal. I recommend following a good at home rehab program for a sprained ankle or go see a good PT. Lastly, if you hear a cracking noise, it's always good to go get an x-ray to rule out a fracture. if you have a fracture, you need to get an okay from your doctor before you start rehab.
