  There is no such thing as a lie detector. They are officially called Polygraph machines. They measure changes in heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. The theory is that when you lie your heart rate increases, your breathing becomes irregular and your blood pressure goes up however other factors can also affect those things. Polygraph operators swear that they can adjust the machine to ignore those other factors but you really just have to take their word for it. Courts won't allow polygraph results to be used as evidence because they are unreliable. That should tell you something. I personally have had employees tested. When one failed I sent them to another polygraph operator and he passed the same person for the same questions. On the other hand, DNA paternity tests are extremely reliable. In most cases, the chance of their being wrong is 1 in hundreds of thousands. They are accepted in court and are accepted as accurate by 99% of scientists.
