Are there many Indians in Austria?

Why are there so many self deprecating Indians in quora?

  • TL:DR: a) Why do we type in self depreciating questions about ourselves in non-Indian completely unrelated topics like "United States of America"? b)Why do we Indians, self depreciate a lot in Quora? I'm relatively new to Quora; and its been an awesome two weeks and i think i might have raised my IQ by 10 points. :) Usually, i don't care much about the nationality of the person answering questions, but i cant disagree to the fact that i do feel  proud when i see a lot of intellectual answers in Quora from Indians. Now coming to the main part, Every single day i login to Quora, there is at least one post by an Indian about how Indians are racist, how Indians judge others based on skin color, how Indians are corrupt, dishonest, how Indian system sucks, how India is the worst country to live in, and so on and so forth. Well, this has been on the back of my mind for the last 2 weeks, and i just thought it was the limit and i'd make a post about it. eg: This question was posted on the topic 'United states of America', 'racism' etc, until i changed it and made the topic 'India'. Now why would any self respecting Indian ask this question in a non Indian topic 'alone'? It just makes me want to throw it all away and go live under a bridge in shame. I'm not say i can vehemently deny the veracity of any of these statements my fellow countrymen make, nor am i worked up about the people posting in regional topics like 'India', but why do we type in multiple non Indian topics where the whole world reads all of these self depreciating questions? Sorry for the long rant, but i honestly believe that this whole self depreciating bit, we do in Quora, is a little over the board. That itself speaks a lot about racism.

I always believed that self-depreciation is very good..still do.. Only a really confident person can truly self-depreciate. If you find Indians who speak of some negative aspects of India, rest assured, he is proud of his culture at the same time he is objective enough to acknowledge its deficits. A lesser person will not speak about his -ves in front of anyone. All he does is play his own trumpet. And the first step to improvement is the actual acknowledgement of the truth. To run away from the truth to 'create' a positive impression is just so sad. And I dont think that Quora is a place to garner positive impressions of a country. Its not a travel brochure. Most people are stating the facts. In quora, there are question and answers which promotes our positives along with answers that portray the unwanted aspects. Accept it. Why dont you get annoyed by the post of our 'great history'? Isnt it  usually a bit superfluous and white-washed take on our past? Obviously there are really great things in our past and we should be proud of it.. We have a rich history, but not a perfect one. how Indians are racist, how Indians judge others based on skin color, how Indians are corrupt, dishonest, how Indian system sucks, how India is the worst country to live in, and so on and so forth. But isn't that a bit true. Its also true that there is more to India than the above characterisation. But I always find it perplexing to find Indians annoyed over ANY negative portrayal of India. Be it the slumdog India or corruption or the hypocrisy.  We will rant about it in India. But if someone else does, we get pissed off. You just cant talk about India without the poverty. They are a VERY significant part of India. Its just that they are not usually our friends and they are not on Quora. And I think this attitude is the main reason why India is still considered backward when viewed objectively. We all know about the elephant in the room. But we wont dare speak about it since it will destroy our perfect outlook of our country and its culture. Learn to take criticism in your stride. It always leads to improvement.

I also had similar feelings some time back, when it dawned on me. 1. Every Country has got a percentage of people who are depreciating to the their country of origin. If the percentage is about 0.01%, the number of individuals in US would be abt 30k, while the number of Indians would be abt 120k. The number of Indian, hence the percentage of Indians on Quora, is also very high compared to any other countries. 2. Anonymous Feature: Indian public is angry for a variety of reasons. It can be anything and everything. They want a place to get rid of the anger. Quora anonymous features fits just right into the bill. 3. Young Crowd: In general, the youth are generally on the edge and low on patience. They get angry faster, and take actions without thinking twice. India has a LARGE percentage of users in this segment. Multiplied with the population, the number just grows. However, I am still saddened that for irresponsible acts of a few, the entire community or country is often seen in bad light. What needs to happen is, more and more students should be encouraged to visit different countries, and once they visit different countries, they will know that it is not all that rosy in different states, which they might think it is. :-)
