Most campgrounds in CA do not allow open fires this time of year due to the high danger of wildfire except at beach campgrounds, so you'll need a campstove for cooking. Kings Canyon (Kern County, Mammoth Lakes (Sierras), El Capitan and Refugio (Santa Barbara County), and Los Osos (San Luis Obispo County) all meet your requirements.

There are literally hundreds of great places to camp in California. Do you have an area in mind? It's a big state! Remember 1st aid, sunscreen, a pad for under your sleeping bag, spare clothes, something warm (even in summer), rain gear and a bear bag. Have fun!

yosemite is nice... its campsites have emenities, trails and sites to see. you should also try going to http://www.recreation.gov it'll list all of the federal campsites and activities nearby. i usually bring my own water, sleeping bag mat, and bug repellent. don't forget the matches and some newspaper to start the fire. book in advance!
