    Loads of good sites everywhere but there is a range of books - cool camping that suggest some very good ones, pick an area, get the book and off you go. Assuming you are in Scotland ("travelling south, maybe lake district"), Glasgow's Tiso had the book when I got it for Scotland, might also have lakes as well

There are dozens of good campsites in the lake District and it is difficult to recommend any to you because we don't know what the two of you are looking for. Do you want the family-type sites with pools and discos, takeaways, etc. or do you prefer the quiet places to get away from the bustle of working life? There are sites alongside several of the lakes and there are others tucked away in little villages with handy little pubs and, maybe, a chippie. Im am wondering why the Lake District "might not suit" you. It is a wonderful area for camping holidays. We belong to both of the camping clubs and so we tend to use their sites which have excellent facilities but no entertainment - which suits us as retirees. (By facilities I mean washrooms/showers/toilets/laundry/etc. etc.) Perhaps your best bet would be to choose an area and then look online for suitable sites with the facilities you need or buy a camping guide book.
