  • Answer:

I have grown up farming and ranching. It has been in my family for many generations. I agree that you can only learn so much from books. Going to an extension service or college is also a good idea. However, the most common thing that farming teaches you is to believe in yourself and follow your instinct. I have read some books and my step-mother is an extension agent and they lack some common knowledge of how to "do things on the farm." My best advice is to read, study, and learn your basics where you can. Following that give it a try. If things don't work out then start over and try again. Teach yourself from your mistakes. Secondly, don't be afraid to ask the community for help and advice. Fellow farmers and ranchers are your greatest source for opinions. Take in what they think, compare it to others, and use what you like. If that doesn't quite work then step back and adjust. Good luck and I wish you the best.
