  • Answer:

You can't confirm who it was. And hint: Wikipedia is not a formal source. If you're writing something academically, use the websites that Wikipedia sites, rather than citing Wikipedia.

Wikipedia articles typically don't have a single author. In fact, there's a guideline ( http://enwp.org/WP:OWN ) saying that an article doesn't belong to whomever starts it or contributes the most to it. That's a basic principle of the way Wikipedia works: anyone can edit (nearly) anything on the site. You can use the Special:Cite page ( http://enwp.org/Special:Cite ) to generate standard citation formats for Wikipedia articles; You'll notice that on that page, the authors are merely mentioned as "Wikipedia contributors". If you want to name specific authors, your best option is to use the Contributors tool ( http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Contributors.php?wikilang=en&grouped=on ), which can be accessed via the history tab of any article (look for a link called "Contributors"). That tool will give you a list of editors who worked on that page, ordered by those who made the most edits. Please note, however, that the number of edits is not always the best measure of the value of each editor's contribution, since, for instance, one could make 20 typo-fixing edits, while someone else completely rewrites the article on a single edit. If you want to make sure, check out the version history of the article. There are two tools that can help you review each editor's contribution to an article: http://toolserver.org/~overlordq/scripts/articlecontribs.fcgi and http://toolserver.org/~thebainer/contribs-by-article/ . Also, consider trying the history search tool at http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/wikiblame.php?lang=en (also accessible at the history tab of all articles; look for a link called "Revision history search"), which can help you find out who wrote a specific passage on the article. Hope this helps!

Waldir's got the best answer here. I can't add to it, but it doesn't deserve the thumbs-down it has. I vouch for it.
