What were East India Company's Businesses (Model, Operations, Strategies etc.)?

• i don't need a complete detailed answer, just whatever you know about it. * who were their major customers and how were they selling the products/services? * what businesses and investments were they involved in. what happened to the east india company and the remnants of it? where can we see east india company's remnants or their successors in operation these days? * how did they succeed so much overwhelmingly over their competitors? * what was their organizational structure? * what were the major acquisitions (british or indian) that they made? * they seem to have stolen a lot of gold and wealth from india, and their goal-orientedness made them immorally and unbritishly remove obstacles in their path and backstab almost every indian prince or commander they would ally with. * how and to what extent were these funds used in their revenue churning process, r&d and investments. * what were their investment strategies? did they do venture capital investments? * what can modern businesses learn from their successes and/or failures?

• Answer:

  They were originally set up to trade in spices from what Europeans called the East Indies - nowadays Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.  But they got pushed out by the Dutch and moved to the Indian sub-continent as second best.   In the 18th century, the French found that European methods of warfare were superior to other forces in the disintegrating Mogul Empire.  The British copied this, and managed to do better.  Control of the sea counted for a lot.   This meant the East India Company becoming the actual ruler of large chunks of India that were nominally ruled by the Mogul Emperors and actually in a state of permanent civil war.   Competition wasn't really allowed, except where it suited the East India Company. The opium trade to China was illegal, so the East India Company grew opium and then sold it to independent traders who smuggled it into China.
