here's the solution; Either update to 8.5 if you aren't updated: http://get.live.com/messenger OR if you are currently using the new BETA version (WLM 9.0) then downgrade back to 8.5!

Yes i get that sometimes, i can just be casually typing away when the whole thing freezes. Its usually solved after a few minutes using 'control, alt, delete', then works perfectly when i log back into msn! Baffles me, but maybes it just needs a wee refresh! Dam you msn! lol xx
