How can I get involved in auto racing?

The first thing I would recommend is volunteering at a nearby track either in the pits with the track or ask for a team manager. Tell them you would like to help out and are very interested in racing. Think of it as if you were applying for a job, bring a resume (if you have past experience of any type of work) and references and tell them you are interested in learning about racing. The team managers should be able to point you in the right direction from there. I would also start racing; open track nights are a great start, or if there are racing facilities (I work at an indoor go-carting track) visit often and talk with the employees. The easiest way is to volunteer for a team then you really are "starting from the bottom" and you earn more respect that way. Hope this helps.

I would start by looking for a job as a scorer at a local track, or as an official in the pits. If there aren't any openings, race a few enduros or whatever is offered locally. Its real cheap racing, and I'm entering my 3rd season and still having fun. After a while, you might wanna start looking for a local online racing forum. The ones here in NY are always advertising for a wanted driver.

First I would get involved with SCCA Solo events. http://scca.org/home.aspx Through them you can start out with Autocrossing (great for learning handling and acceleration), and move on to drivers schools and racing on the tracks.

Most local tracks have a class that is geared for beginners and others with small racing budgets. It may be called "street stock", "bombers", "factory stocks", etc. Get a rule book from the track you want to run. Some tracks post their rules on their web page. Then either buy or build a car. (I would recommend buying an already built car for a first time racer) As for money, it will probably have to be your own. That means you will have to get a job. ...Have fun and be safe.

Look into Skip Barber Racing School or Bob Bondurant. These schools hire and train mechanics. Many mechanics also get to race. This is a good way to get started and get some reliable experience.
