Where is the best place to learn to snowboard for a teenager?

    Forget the embarrassment. Every rider was a beginner at one time. Sign up for a class lesson and make some new friends. Everyone in the class will be the same as you, a NSB. In my classes, we start learning on the flats and within an hour an average class will take one or more rides on the beginners chair. These classes are usually pretty close in age on the weekends, but more diverse mid week. Mid week is much less crowded at the area where I teach. We teach thousands to enjoy the sport every year, relax, enjoy, listen to the instructor.

What state do you live in? You'll have the best conditions, instructors, and longer trails out West (CO, UT, ID, CA) but a beginner hill in Colorado is the same as a beginner hill in Minnesota. GO wherever is cheapest and/or closest to home. If you are embarrassed to be in a group/class setting, take private lessons. You'll learn more in a 1/2 day of private instruction than a full day group lesson anyway. Find a resort that offers a multiple lesson package, like x amount off per lesson if you sign up for 5 or something like that. Give yourself 5-10 days on the hill before you decide if you like it or not. Snowboarding is hard to learn, but easy to master. Also, check to see with the ski and ride school to see if there instructors are AASI (American Association of Snowboard Instructors) certified. A certified instructor will give you a better lesson, go through formal progression steps, and actually know what they are talking about. Good luck, its a great life-long sport.
