Wanted to start doing a bit of ice skating but what's the difference between Ice dance and figure skating? Is it the same thing?

Answer:
The group ice skating lessons will teach you figure skating: solo jumps and spins as well as basic skating skills. When you get further into your career, you can decide if what you are doing suits you, or if you would rather do ice dancing: artistic footwork, no jumps, some artistic spins. The primary focus is on deep, smooth edges, fast turns, and intricate footwork. Even without jumps, it is still difficult because of the difficult footwork and edge quality. It can also be hard to find a decent dance partner to compete nationally and internationally with if you get to that point. Here is a small page about getting started in ice dancing (and pairs): http://www.usfigureskating.org/Athletes.asp?id=326 Have fun in your lessons!

If you are just starting out, yes, it is the same thing. A few years down the line it becomes different. Ice dancers don't do jumps beyond single rotation jumps, but they do far harder footwork than figure skaters do (and more of it). Seriously good competitive skaters (i.e. senior internationals) do one or the other. Many very good competitive kids do both.

Ice Dancing is figure skating, but just it's a bit different. Ice dancing is with 2 skaters but it's like dancing. They don't do jumps like throw axel, lutz, and etc. They are all figure skating but just different disciplines Ice Dancing Pair Skating Single Skating

Ice dancing- is a patteren around the ice with music (not that you pick) but you have pilliminary, pre-bronze,pre-silver,pre-gold,bronze,si... ice dance is very hard but it teaches you how to controll but it is not jumps and spins like you would learn in normal figure skating lesson!

You choose which field you want to join when your good enough, this is mainly only when your at competition level so should be in a few years if you are a non-skater, ice dance has many different rules and varies whether or not you choose to do pairs its the same with figure skating x
you probably want figure skating, ice dancing can be alot of things, i'd learn to skate before dancing
