What size GS (giant slalom) skis should I get based on my measurements?

  • Answer:

Pick a brand that you like and demo 2-3 different lengths. For a race GS ski I would try to put you on a 160 or 165 cm ski in a medium to stiff race flex. Any longer and you risk the gates being too close, much shorter and the flex gets softer and will not support your size at race speeds. You do not mention what class racer or what circuit you compete. Check with the coach about lengths and turn radius that may impact your decision. Many world cup class women are on 150 cm SL and 155 GS. At your weight forget any junior or youth ski, it will not properly support you at race speeds. When you demo a ski remember that how it is tuned makes a big difference in how it skis.

At 5'3" everyone will just try to put you onto 165cm's but at 175lbs I'd have you on a pair of large(175cm or 180cm) junior GS race skis. they'll be alittle harder to initiate a turn but you'll find better edge control and stability at higher speeds. You're carrying enough weight to make the larger size carve and you'll find that you'll be able to lean forward into the hill better for more speed without losing control
