  • I know that getting a tattoo is painful, but some areas of the body incur more pain than others. So, I was wondering where is the least painful and where is the most painful. All ...show more

  • Answer:

Everyone, as you probably know, has different levels of pain tolerance. Something that hurts one person badly, may not be as bad for someone else. Generally speaking, though, the most painful areas to get tattooed are: 1. Any Joints (the crook of your arm, armpit, backs of the knees, etc.) 2. Ribcage 3. Top of the foot. 4. Inside of the ear. 5. Top of the head. 6. Between the fingers (and TOES) 7. Any place on the body where there is not a lot of "weathering" i.e. soft, tender skin. 8. Right near your areola. (Damn near peed myself on that one, no lie) 9. Stomach Least painful? Forearms, back (right over the spine- the love handle area hurts like a bit**), biceps, neck (sides), calves, kneecaps, elbows.

arm pits and genitals are going to be the worst.......as far as the least.....don't really know, usually depends on the person.

Tattoos are most painful over areas where the bone is close to the skin, so for most people, it would be one of the wrist/ankle/collarbone/spinal areas. Tattoos are least painful over fatty tissue areas, so the butt cheeks or a breast (on a woman at least) would be most tolerable.

I have been told the rule of thumb is the closer you are to bone and the less fat on the area the more it will hurt. I have three one on my chest one on my ankle and one just below the bikini line. I got the first two over 10 years ago( the ankle and the chest) and I swore I would never do it again but time helps you forget the pain. Well at least some of it but between those two, the ankle was the worst. All together I would say the bikini was the worst for me but it has only been a few months ago since I got it and even then the most pain was when he was doing it and only while he was doing curves and color. Good Luck and if I could give anyone advice on getting a tattoo it would be to choose what you want one day but do not get it done for a week or so to give your self some time to be sure.

I have 3, one on my ankle, a small cross on the back of my neck and another one on my lower back. The lower back tattoo hurt the least, my ankle hurt the most and the neck hurt too, just not as much as the ankle. Really it does depend on your pain tolerance. I tend to have a higher pain tolerance level. One of my friends said her neck tattoo hurt the worst. Really, some of it just feels like something scrapping you and other times it almost feels like a small shock. Not a strong shock, the kind you feel if you accidently have your finger too far down on the prongs when you plug something into a socket. At least this was my experience, my dearest friend in the world sounded like she was being killed when she got her tattoo.

I have several and people have told be that on the spine is terrible. The spine is full of nerves and there are some weird sensations but no pain. I know several people with tats and the verdit is...under the arms, inner thighs, tops of feet, ankles, knuckles, chest. Basically, if it's not a meaty area it can hurt or cause weird sensations. Becareful...they are addictive especially if you have a high tolerance for pain.

At my work the policy they have is the more fat the less pain. If you get the tattoo where there is little fat and it is close to the bone then its going to be alot more painful. If it is somewhere with more fat then its going to be less painful. This is just a general rule of course and different people have different pain thresh holds. I would be more helpful if I had more time.

least painful = shoulder or upper back most painful = backside of upper arm (on the tricep muscle) where the arm flab is. i also have a friend who got one on the inside of his lip.... looked painful to me lol.
