Where are some places that I could travel to?

I am taking a one year sabbatical to travel. I am 28 years old. It's pretty overwhelming to plan. Where are the places that I should travel to and where should I start?

  • EDIT: To clarify, I'm starting in August. Someone suggested starting from North ( for example, scandi ).  Also, what websites do you use to get travel ideas? Is Lonely Planet really the best source ( there's too much information overload ). Also, is it ok to couchsurf to minimize expenses? I had bad experience with hostels when I was young in terms of security. Further clarification :  1) One long trip, starting from the U.S. 2) Starting in August 3) Budget should be ok, but want to keep it around 25-30K 4) Interested in things I'd never get to see if it wasn't for a 1 year trip. What are these things?

  • Answer:

To keep your budget low, couchsurfing is a great resource. Also use facebook and twitter to ask your friends if they know anyone in the countries you'll be visiting. Splurge on excellent international health insurance that includes air lifts. Before you go, consider a quick Spanish course (if you choose South America as a destination). If you speak the language, you'll be likely to get better deals and move around easier. I do recommend Lonely Planet. We supplemented with lots of googling and an occasional Frommers. I'd focus on 3 or 4 countries in South America.

You have one year. Travel all over the world, until you run out of cash. Maybe, now that it is Spring, it may be useful to start from some northern part of the world for which this could be an ideal time to visit. Maybe, Scandinavia? The tropics and equatorial regions are better done later in the year; they may be too hot now.
