  It is SO EASY to find the details on things like this on the Internet!!! It's unbelievable that so few people have figured this out. You can get all the details you want about the BNSF merger from the BNSF's web site. It's lots easier than posting a question on Yahoo!Answers. I mean it's great to talk to people, and all, but if you want that kind of detailed information, it's just so easy to do an internet search on "BNSF" and get all the information you could possibly need. The BNSF is the result of a merger between the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe (called the "Santa Fe") railroad and the Burlington Northern. In the merger the two companies each bought portions of the others' assets, exchanged stock, and in other ways merged their assets and identities. Before that, the Burlington Northern was the result of a merger between the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad and the Great Northern Railway. If you go back far enough, all of the railroads of the 20th Century are the result of mergers and buyouts of large numbers of older smaller railroads.
