CAN YOU EXPLAIN ABOUT A RAIL HUMP YARD?

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT A HUMP YARD IS, AND HOW IT WORKS?
-
Answer:
At the head of the yard is a track which goes uphill for a short distance and then downhill. Beyond this is the 'fan', the series of points aka switches which divide the line into the various sidings where the cars are to be marshalled. A locomotive pushes a line of cars over the hump, so that they roll down the hill by gravity. A signal box aka interlocking tower sets the switches so that each car or cut of cars goes into the required road and as they enter the road, brakes fitted to the rails known as retarders slow the cars down.

A hump is the crest of of track, top of hill. where the car is weighed bar code read uncoupled & sent down a track called a ladder, because of the # of switches coming off this track it looks like a ladder. It's about a 2% grade and at this point the rail car rolling on gravity. There are brakes built into the tracks called Retarders, that will slow the car and CP's Control points that are the auto controlled switches. A train building to go to New York City might be on track #23 So at the 23ed switch,it get's switched to that track. Then it's still downhill @ about 2% grade. the cars open coupling will eventually slam and lock into the the train building for NYC. I worked re building Dewitt yard Ny in the 1970's I miss railroading it could be the best or the worst job. -M-
