My 83 year-old best friend wants to renew his pilot's license after 30 flightless years.?

What does he have to do? How many training hours, etc will he require?

Answer:
Actually there are a couple of things he CAN do. If he has a valid Drivers License and his Pilot Certificate, all he needs to do is have a check ride or "Flight Review" done in a Light Sport aircraft. There are several "light sport" CFI's around these days. He is then legal to fly Light Sport Category aircraft. That would be small two place aircraft with low horse power many with very nice equipment. The old Piper Cubs are also "Light Sport" qualified. For many pilots these days, it is a great option. If he wants the full certificate to be valid, he will need a Third Class Medical exam done at an AME there should be some listed in the phone book near you. Then a flight review from a CFI (nearest small airport should have a few CFI's around). Then he is legal to fly. If he just wants to fly some, he can go up with a CFI anytime he wants. AOPA has lots of information to help in the "get back into flying" section http://www.aopa.org/members/files/guides/getback.html

well...he needs a copy of his pilot's certificate. They dont expire, but he needs a copy...he can contact the FAA for that. Then he needs a medical certificate. A trip to an FAA "accredited" (dont remember the right term) doctor. Then a trip to the local airfield, where legally, all he needs is a biennial flight review (BFR) However, money can be saved if he reads up on the Federal Air Regulations (FARs) which you can also find a www.faa.gov I believe it is. I hope he does it all, and gets back in the cockpit.

The license is plastic, not paper any more, and must have "English Proficient" on it. He should probably go to the local airport and find an instructor, sit down with him. He'll also need a current medical, but again the local FBO can provide a list of AMEs.

I would say to get his eyes and hearing checked. If he can't see where he's going, then he won't see fellow planes or the gauges. If he can't hear well, then he won't hear the tower radioing him when to take off, land, or about any imminent danger. Training hours he'll have to find out when he re-applies for his license. Hopefully, they should tell him all the necessary requirements needed to renew after being out of the game for so long.

He needn't do anything. Just let him apply for it.
