How to make a carbon fiber hood?

Make Carbon Fiber hood ?

  • Alright since the cf hood is expensive starting $400 I got that crazy idea: what if I get a sheet of CF cuz its cheap and just put it on my hood will that work?

  • Answer:

on a paintel metal hood, not really. On a bare metal hood, maybe. Crappy cf hoods are just fiberglass hoods with a sheet of carbon fiber layed on. Good hoods have two opposing layers of carbon fiber usually with a kevlar honeycomb matrix in between. The 400 dollar one is just fiberglass and carbon fiber. Laying carbon fiber isn't really something the home doer can do. You need a huge oven to bake pieces.

I saw an article about cloning body parts with fiberglass (or carbon fiber) in a hot-rod magazine a while back. The trick is to make a mold. i.e., you woul need to remove your hood, wax the crap out of it, and coat it on one side in a few layers of plaster of paris. Then, once dried, you simply remove the hood. Then you wax the inside of the mold (or use a fiberglass resin release) and start painting resin on. Then once it's all covered, you lay on your carbon fiber/fiberglass sheets, and paint on more resin. Once enough layers are on, you will want to vacuum-press it. They sell large vacuum bags for this. Basically, you cover the whole thing in peel-ply and then an absorbant cloth. Then it goes in the bag and the vaccum sucks out all the bubbles, while pulling the excess resin into the absorbant cloth. You can heat it with an electric blanket or some other simple heater. The big thing here is the vaccum pump. I have one lying around for AC work, but if you don't have access to one, it would cost you more to get one than it would to buy the hood. You can still do it, you just have to be ok with bubbles and a bit less strength.

How about avoiding the ricer route altogether and getting something performance wise instead of a shitty carbon fiber hood?
