    Hire companies need to protect themselves from customers who either write off the car in an accident without having paid a collision damage waiver ( to pay the first 1000 euro ) or steal the vehicle by hiring using a false i/d.

Im 99% sure that all car hire companies need credit card details to reserve the car, and then when you take the car they need to kepp the details, for security purposes. They will also photocopy your drivers license and possibly your passport. Im not sure if they will actually want to see the credit card, yif you book it online with someone elses credit card, then when you get there just explain that you dont have one.... im not sure what else to suggest :-) hope this helped a bit
