Hi! I want to buy a good quality reel for surf fishing, using a 20lb test line of mono, and 3 to 5 oz lead weight, I'm thinking about a conventional reel less than $200.00. The reason ...show more

Answer:
Although I would always use and recommend spinning gear for surf fishing, as far as line holding capability, The Penn Senator has been a champion for many years and can hold a ton of line, 400 - 800 ft., as far as conventional reels go, Penn is tough to beat, here's the sight with a bunch more options........

I agree with The Shop. Spinning is the way to go for Surf fishing. And with todays new Kevlar lines, the worries of never having enough line on your reel is over. Power Pro 6/20 (The diameter of 6LB mono with the strength of 20LB mono.), is excellent for any type of shore-fishing and it takes a LONG time for it to degrade. However, I don't agree with his reel choice. (In my opinion), PENN was once a leader in spinning outfits but they've decided, (to save money) to start letting China make parts for some of their spinning reels. The quality has gone down. Tried and true surf-fishing reel??: Daiwa "Black & Gold" BG20 or BG30. Matched with a large spinning reel and Power Pro 6/20 line you could put as much as 750-800 YRDS on a spool! (And probably only have to change it every 2nd-3rd year ,depending on how much you fish!) Thumbs to Shop!

The Diawa is a good choice. I had the pleasure to cast a Diawa this weekend and mannn... I have to say it felt really good. I think it was a sealine, but either way I would have to say they make a quality casting reel. I easily got over 100 yards chunkin 5 oz. weight on a 9' medium heavy action surf rod. No Lie... I agree with you on choosing a conventional reel.. Down here on the gulf coast spinning reels aren't cool at all. Whatever your choice.. good luck. Down me if you want, but I speak from a little experience with tossing big baits and weight. I have handled many baitcasting reels from the surf. Pro Gear, Avet, Newell, Shimano, and Abu Garcia, are all part of my tackle collection that I keep in top condition with upgraded parts and components. I would not give bad advise on the Diawa if I didnt believe it would meet expectations nor biased because I favor eggbeater reels.
