I think that when hooked in the lip there would not be much pain if any. Snagged or hooked in the gills would be a different situation.

Bobby

put a fish hook through your lip and find out.

Touching conundrum; but fish are prey everyday, even if you have given the sport up.

As stated above, the part of their brain that processes pain is very small, especially when you consider how small their brain is to begin with. And on top of that, there are relatively few nerve endings in the 'lip' area.

no the part of a fishes' brain that feels pain is almost non-existent if you have ever reeled in a fish close to you enough to see it then stop pulling they will swim around like nothing is going on hope I helped

Fish do feel the hook but what you have to realize is that the part of their brain that senses pain is very small. The struggle that they put up is due to instinct and the need to preserve its life, not out of pain. That's how predatory fish like bass can eat bluegills and perch or crawfish for that matter. They feel the stick of the spines or the claws pinching but they need to feed so its almost expected that they feel that stimulus. Your hook isn't gonna hurt them. Now its unfortunate when you eye hook a fish or gill hook them. Fish can still survive with one eye. Ive caught many fish that have one eye only. Some may die with a gill hook, but if you set the hook right away instead if letting them swallow it or, in the event that you do have a throat or gill hooked fish, cut the hook instead of tearing it out, theyll have a good chance of surviving. The hooks will basically dissolve in the fishes mouth over a short period of time. So go fishing and enjoy yourself. Practice catch and release so future generations can enjoy fishing as well. If youre a responsible angler, then you have nothing to worry about. The fish that you enjoy catching will be fine. I hope I helped. Good luck and let the big ones go!!!
