Both Rome and Naples are within 4 hours drive of Campobasso, so the number of MUST SEES is enormous. However, there are a number of sites in Campobasso that are interesting. Museo Sannitico is located in the Centro Storico at Via Chiarizia, 12 (in Palazzo Mazzarotta). It's just a short walk up the street from Chiesa di San Leonardo. It includes many artifacts from the various archeological sites in the area. It also has a full-size display that depicts the typical dress of the Samnite people. If your family originated in the Campobasso area, then the Samnites are probably your ancestors. Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate is considered one of the finer examples of the baroque style in Molise. It was built circa 1572 and, unlike many other old churches, has not been affected by earthquake or other calamity. All of the medieval churches in Campobasso are worth a look. In particular, the Cattedrale has several fine paintings by Amodeo Trivisonno and Chiesa di Santa Maria del Monte has a capella dedicated to Padre Pia that is interesting (paintings also by Amodeo Trivisonno). An old fountain, Vecchia Fontana, is located on Strada Sant'Antonio Abate as you travel away from the center of Campobasso; this was where the women washed their clothes in the old days and the fountain is still flowing. In fact, the gypsies still use it for that purpose. It's interesting to see how our ancestors lived and worked. The other main beach area in Molise other than Termoli is Campomarino. The other small towns in Molise can be quite interesting and the hill country is beautiful. Do you know what town your family originated in?
