  • Answer:

While the SV650 is an excellent bike, I would recommend it as a 2nd bike after you have gained some experience after a couple of years or so. Start off with something a little smaller, like the post above suggested, maybe a Ninja 250 or 500, EX500, GSF500, or another similar bike. Also as noted above, do not buy a new bike as your first bike. Many new riders do end up dropping their bike at some point ( I'll admit it, I did... ). Having a cheaper, used bike will make that drop much easier to deal with.

In Australia they have schemes which limit the power to weight ratio of motorcycles for learner and provisional licence holders. The Suzuki SV650SF or it's equivalent model in Australia falls outside what is legal. The biggest Suzuki learner legal model is the XF650, a 4 stroke single cylinder "duel roader". There are numerous other makes and models which are suitable. Choose carefully to make your first motorcycle experiences carefully. Ask your local M/C association for advice. Sales people may not be impartial. Apart from the maximum power, the power delivery is important. A larger 4 stroke such as a low output 500 twin cylinder or 650 gives relaxed delivery and doesn't need a lot of revs. Small 2 strokes and high reving 4 strokes can be challenging to ride smoothly. Choose a bike with dry weight below 350 lbs as when learning you need to hold it up a lot if you stall. Seat height should be on the low side unless you are over 6 ft. Buy good helmut and other protective gear.

There is nothing wrong with a SV650 as a beginner bike.

One of the best in my opinion, and not only a good beginners bike, it is a good bike for anyone at any level.

YES, the Suzuki SV650 is a very easy bike to ride and control and it would make a beginner look like a pro riding it. Its fast and comfortable, and reliable
