  As a professional graphic designer and an artist, i could not emphasize enough the importance of foundations. Foundations to us, are respectively what biology is to doctors. Anyone could probably be taught to mimic an act or action, however it takes knowledge to actually understand why that works. The same principals are applied to art, design, architecture, and every other science and art out there. With arts the foundations lie much in how colors, light, shape, form and the human psyche and perception work. With architecture things shift more to mathematics, structure, gravity and so on. Every school of knowledge has its own foundations. You may wonder why you should take the time to learn the foundations when they are clearly so simple and rudimentary. To this I say two reasons. One, you can never get enough practice, the foundations should be drilled until they are second nature to you. You shouldn't even have to think about them when you work. Second, the foundations allow you to better piece together an understanding of how and why your work works. As a graphic designer it is my job to create things which are easily consumed and interpenetrated by the human eye and brain. The path of least resistance. I have to be aware of where things are, how they are placed, the information that is provided, how the viewer will interpenetrate what they see... I basically have to figure out the "consumer" and then have to master the information i am feeding them. It sounds like a lot of things, but in reality its just a bunch of little things put together. That in essence is what foundations provide. All the small things you need to be successful. Hope this helps, Cheers
