Answer:
It's actually not as big a deal as you might think. I got my first job as a graphic designer over a year before I even started school for my AA in Graphic Design. The job still paid over $20 an hour (Southern California). What you need is a killer portfolio. Get it online or in PDF form if you can because making it easy to get to is the biggest plus. Just apply, apply, apply. Focus your resume on whatever experience you have to offer. You should be able to talk to someone at the Career Development office at your school to help you highlight this. I've always had my resume looked at first, so don't dismiss its importance. If you have something to offer, don't undersell yourself. You don't have to live on Top Ramen just because you're a student. I still only have my AA and am working toward a BA. Even if you can't get a high paying job, it's still going to pay more than fast-food and you'll get valuable experience that will put you ahead when you graduate. So, go for it!

You're right about lower pay with an associate degree. If you want to land a job with a decent/reputable company (or agency), you'll definitely need your bachelor's degree. Otherwise, you'll end up working at mom&pop shops. So, it's a great thing that you're going for your bachelor's. If you can build a "killer" portfolio in 2 years, I'd say go for it. Still let's be realistic, with your elective classes you'll be taking as well during those 2 yrs, I wonder how many of the higher level graphic design classes you'll be able to take before the graduation. These are the classes that'll concentrate on building a strong portfolio. Actually, you can only take these classes during your jr. and sr. year if you went to a traditional 4-yr school. I'm only speaking from my personal experience. Others, however, seem to have different perspective. Regarding your question about an employment with an associate degree, you probably will find a job working as a graphic designer but not any company will hire you. You'll have much more opportunities with your bachelor's. Good luck with everything. Build that "killer" portfolio.
