How to output XML from a regular SQL query?

What is the best scripting language to take the output from a sql query and append to an existing excel workbook?

  • I am new to scripting, and would like some advice. I have several different hive.ql queries that I run daily, taking the output and adding it to some excel reports I have put together to analyze the data. I have written a bash script that automagically updates the date ranges in each respective query, and kicks them off for me so I don't have to run each one manually. This saves me a good chunk of time. However, I would really like to be able to write a script that will take the output of each query, and append it to the corresponding excel worksheet so I don't have to manually copy and paste the data. I know this can be done in several languages, but because I am new to scripting, I would prefer to do it in a language that is also a good scripting language to learn in terms of future utility. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I haven't done it for a while but I think the simplest by far would be to script it in the spreadsheet using Visual Basic and an ODBC connection.
