What is the best way to spend money on PPC/SEM (pay per click/search engine marketing)?
-
If you had a limited budget to spend of $500 (or more, if required, just trying to get a frame of reference here. The budget is not the point), what search engine company(ies) would you spend it with, how would you spread out the budget and what would be your reasoning behind the campaign(s)? This is to reflect an individual buying the SEM/PPC, not just plopping down the dough with an agency to push buttons and flip switches...

Answer:
My experience is that PPC campaigns are best for harvesting an existing demand on the market. The marketing, which doesn't sell is not a proper marketing, so an ultimate goal of such a campaign is crystal clear. You can check out my blog post about the differences between PPC and SEO, if you would like to go deeper in the subject. http://positionly.com/blog/post/44214124129/ppc-vs-seo-quick-results-or-sustainable-effects

Here's a tip, especially for local businesses - it's called day parting. As in, you schedule your ads only to appear during business hours of the day. If you follow customer trends in clicks and conversions by the hour of the day, you'll notice the peak hours. You can bully out your competitors on bids by focusing on certain times of the day. Make sure you are constantly optimizing based on these trends. You don't want to miss your customers, but if you're on a tighter budget, just wait for 'the right moment' of the day and bust out the cannons to hit your prospects when they want you most. I have it all managed for me, so no sweat. Simon can set you up to get managed if you're interested, just call him at 256-398-3835.

The only good answer you'll get is "it depends". What is your product or service? Who are your customers? Are they searching for what you offer? How much is a customer worth to you? Etc.

Before going into details of how to use a $500 budget and where to spend it, the objective of the campaign must be set. Is it branding, lead generation, sales, etc.?Once the objective is clear the two main choices available are Google and Bing/Yahoo and the next major player is Baidu. Based on experience, in lead generation campaign, cost per conversion is lower in Google. Plus, there are more people using Google than Bing/Yahoo and Baidu, more like a 23:7:3 ratio in terms of market share. If you're also targeting China, then Baidu should be a given. The best way to go about it in the first month is to allot budget for each search engine mentioned (assuming Baidu is included) and use the same ratio as the one above. This has helped our company https://www.redlettersph.com/services/ppc-management/ gather data for clients and make data-driven decisions.
