    Well, if you want an 'awesome' system, then you must avoid Bose, LG, and Samsung. They're all solid crap. The only difference is that LG and Samsung make cheap crappy sound systems, and Bose makes expensive crappy systems. Google -Bose sucks- and read for more. Now, good sound does range from very quiet to very loud. Because real life sound does, too. So that's not a flaw in a sound system. If you want to spend not more than $500, then have a look at some of the Onkyo receiver and speaker combios, such as the 3400 model. You cxan also get a receiver, such as a Pioneer 522K for around $200, and pair it up with a good speaker combo, such as the Polk 6750 or 705 sets, both of which are 5.1 speaker sets, and which go from about $225 to $250 for the set. You can also allow yourself to be able to upgrade later on by buying a 7.1 receiver, which will cost more, then starting with one of those Polk sets, and when you have more $$$ later on, adding a pair of Polk speakers to the Polk set, which would then give you a 7.1 speaker combo. But really, avoid Bose.

start building you own system, onkyo has good bundles out there. go with onkyo h/k denon. bose is way way way over priced.

you need to find the "night mode" our "volume compression" or some such. it will keep the volume even so you dint have to keep changing it. i hate dynamic volume compression in music but if i have to adjust between deafening binds and inaudible dialog during a movie i just get pissed off. so i do use the light night mode setting.
