How to buy TIVO Subscription ONLY?

If I buy a TIVO box with a lifetime subscription from a private party, what problems might I have?

My understanding is that the lifetime subscription goes with the box, not the owner. So you should be able to contact TiVo to reactivate the box with lifetime service. One thing to watch out for is TiVo Basic, which is a free barebones Tivo service that doesn't have any of the advanced features like Season Pass and TiVoToGo. TiVo Basic was offered on a few boxes like the Toshiba and Humax DVD units. I've seen people listing these for sale on eBay and calling it Lifetime service without mentioning that it is the Basic variety.
