    Not sure if that video capture card is going to work for you. It depends on how the signal comes out of the dvr. If you think that it will come out of the usb port, you will find out that the usb port does nothing and is for future use. I would go with method 2 and get a nice dvd recorder. By the time you pay for the cables to access your cpu, you could buy the device and not worry about all the formatting junk.

transferring would not work because the files are proprietary and owned by directv, the only option is to replay them to a dvd recorder or a tuner card with windows media center are something similar
