no u dont need ur tv on. you could just tune your satellite receiver to the channel you want and just set a timer for the recorder. since it looks like you can afford all these products you might as well buy a good home theater remote. http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/10967581/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_e_1_5_last this was just a quick google search. if you do want a real universal remote then these are the kind you should be looking for.
