How can I do some time lapse photography?

What are the economics of time-lapse photography - how much is it done for  profit versus hobby/art?

  • In the last few years I've seen a lot of amazing time-lapse videos, I know all of them take a lot of time to shoot and maybe even more to process/stitch. Though, most I've seen, even if flawless, a work of hobby. Is this mostly the case?

  • Answer:

There is a market for stock and microstock time-lapse footage.  There might also be a market for commissioned footage.  In any case the economics of this is little different than the market for other kinds of footage.  Yes, time-lapse takes time, but you are not paying for models, makeup artists, sound editing, spending time setting up lighs, etc.

Keep in mind that most time lapse photography is not done "by hand".  You have a timer which periodically takes a frame, so you basically set it up and forget it. Animation takes a LOT more work.
