How to see if one string contains another string?

In Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" he mentions that one way to prove string theory is correct- is if astronomers can one day "see" a macroscopic string. What would a string look like, if we could see it? How would we perceive the extra dimensions?

Assume a piece of paper .its 2 dimensional now roll it and see it from a distance it looks like 1 dimensional object. This is how 11dimensions are rolled in string theory and strings nature I think will be an energy source.
