    You don't have to erase as Mac OS Extended unless you plan to install Mac OS on the drive. Just format it as MS-DOS. Then you can use it on both Mac and Windows computers. The problem is it was formatted NTFS which is read-only for the Mac. You need FAT-32 format (Disk Utility calls it "MS-DOS") for both read and write.

Use the previous answers instructions. After reformatting and you want to use the drive only as a data storage drive, get info of the drive, ctrl click on it's icon, and place a tick next to Ignore Ownership and Permissions. If you are going to install OS X on the drive to make it bootable, do not place a tick on Ignore Ownership.
