    >First thing to understand is that since most of the Linux O/S's are free (Red Hat, Mandrake are a couple of exceptions), you CANNOT screw up. If you do screw up, you merely, wipe the hard disk clean and reinstall from scratch. So it really comes down to which distribution to try out. Of course, everyone says Ubuntu, but I don't think Ubuntu is necessarily the best version or the final do-all, say all. In fact, you should be prepared to try out several versions to see what works best for you. I would also try some not-so-bloated versions to see if a slimmed down version works better or if you just like it better. There are literally TONS AND TONS of distro's out there. If you know enough about the Kernel, you can even put your OWN personal version together that no one else has. Big named top three: Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora Core Two that I think are manageable and SMALL: Puppy Linux, Damned Small Linux Damned Small Linux is one you have to pay a few bucks for (very minimal), but it is by far the smallest and the fastest and the neatest Linux distro out there...I would at least try it out along with a major distro if I were you. Next - Every distro has a forum on the net. Make sure you google the distro and find the major forum and JOIN IT! YOu will need to do this to ask questions about problems you are encountering. Next - Join some general net forums on Linux in general, not specific to any one distro. This is where you learn not only about your own distro but about all kinds of distros. Check the LINUXKERNEL site - Linus Torvalds personally updates the Linux Kernel. Keep your eye on what is going on... Learn the meaning of "GNU." Whatever distro you use, get used to using the command line and the GNU COMPILER for C++...learn the commands to pack and unpack linux packages and how to COMPILE open code. Linux is getting better, but is still not nearly as efficient at games as Windows is - there are Linux games, but its not like Windows! So accept that fact right now or forget Linux! Linux is for people who know how to THINK WITH THEIR HEADS, and you are expected to use your brain and not be a dum asdkfkj like a lot of windows users are...if you cannot handle the technical detail, best stick with Windows. Make sure you know how to BURN AN ISO IMAGE. You can try most of the distros out there with a non-installing version you can download and burn an iso image of to preview the operating system before you install it. Once you have made the decision to install, then you have to download a different version that installs. IF YOU EVER WANT TO DUAL BOOT, NEVER EVER INSTALL LINUX FIRST AND THEN DECIDE TO INSTALL WINDOWS LATER - don't ever do this! Windows is not designed to see or operate with Linux, so the best thing to do is to FIRST AND ALWAYS install Windows first, because Linux is designed to accomodate and dual boot, a Windows version. Learn the Linux Filesystem commands - if you are so limp and weak you cannot get yourself motivated to talk to the computer, you don't belong in the Linux world.

It comes down to what program(s) you want to use. If you have programs that run only in Windows, then you have to use Windows.
