How to get Hi8 video to a computer?

How can I get video from my Hi8 (8mm) camcorder onto my computer?

  You transfer video through a firewire cable. Some hi8 camcorders have a firewire connection, and some don't. If you do have a firewire connection, you'll need a firewire cable, (4 to 6 pin), the 4 pin end connects to the cam, and the 6 pin end to the computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, you can purchase one from virtually any electronics store for under or around $20-$40. All you do is purchase it, install the driver, and put it in an empty pc slot in the back of your computer. Now, If you have all of this...you will then need non-linear editing software. This will allow you a place to capture the footage from your camera to, and edit it, ( Add transitions, titles, so forth..) Once it is edited in the manner you desire, the software will also allow you to output it however you want. Ex. You can output it to a dvd, video file to email...and etc. There are a lot of editing softwares available. EX. Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Ulead....You can get a decent one for around $49. If your camera does not have a firewire connection. You can still get the video from it by using a hi8 deck.
