The USB port should connect your camcorder to your laptop with the ability to read/write without any issue, but the camera has to be powered up to do so. Connect the cord then make sure your battery has sufficiant charge to power the camcorder throughout the transfer or connect it to mains power. Your computer should recognise the camcorder as an external flash storage devise, so just open up finder and head to devices. If your on a Windows devise open Control Panel. *EDIT* Go with Dennis's answer - It's a lot more detailed and accurate than mine!
