Do enzyme drinks really enhance users' health and help them stay young?
-
Enzyme drinks are pretty popular in Asia, especially Japan. The ingredients contain hundreds kinds of botanical extracts and it is claimed that by replacing regular diet with those drinks periodically, customers can be healthier. Is it just another commercial advertisement blitz or is it scientifically proven to be effective? If so, what's the mechanism? Hard to imagine any of the enzymes - which mostly are proteins - not getting broken down by the stomach's hydrochloric acid and the digestive juices also further down in the bowels. Our digestive system can't absorb whole proteins, we break them down to their constituent amino-acids, even when not wholly broken down but down to a short polypeptide containing a maximum of 4 amino-acids which can be taken up in a cell, in the cell the polypeptide will still be broken down to its constituent amino acids. So no possibility of taking up these enzymes whole, so what's the point of paying a lot a money for these drinks? But then, many claims in the health food industry isn't founded on hard science.

There is no substantial and proper clinical evidence that these drinks do as they claim. If you are using them, just hope that they do you no harm.
