What are some of the best free resources for Web development?

What are the best resources for learning the key concepts of web development?

  • I'm not interested in a resource that specifically teaches Node.js, or Ruby on Rails, or MongoDB, or HTML5, or Java servlets. I want a resource which examines the overall space of web technology, situating each of these platforms/languages (and others) within a comprehensive conceptual framework, according to considerations like the following: - What problem is the technology trying to solve? - How does the technology attempt to solve the problem? - What are the relative pros/cons among the different technologies for solving any given problem? - What is a historical sketch of different approaches to this problem (perhaps including technologies which have now fallen out of favor?) In short, I'm seeking resources which impart something like the distilled wisdom of a developer with decades of experience, who can situate any specific technology (such as MongoDB) within an overall framework which clarifies what is new/useful/bad/experimental/etc. about the technology. [The more broad the resource, the better, but for example if there is an excellent resource that only deals with database technologies, that's still useful to know.]

well, i think "Creative" is the most important thing for web development. Also, you need to know the user experience for web design. Show you an example - MagicTheme, which has done a good job: http://www.magictheme.com/
