What are economic trends?

Aarkstore - Global Text Analytics Market: What exactly would someone do, if they had a list of all the current trends at any point of time?

  • There's a lot of research going after finding the current trends at my university, but I don't understand what could be a good application of it? Most obvious ones are news articles about those trends, and/or social media updates or sentiment analysis about them. But what else? Why is it so valuable? By trends, I mean, all the 'hot' stuff people are tweeting or talking or searching about

You can use the trending data to offer your users recommendations: Humans are social creatures and tend to do what everyone does (that's why "Top 10" lists of stuff are so popular). Let's say you have a shopping site and you know what are the areas that interests some user. You would wish to recommend him more things to buy, and you wish your recommendation will have higher chance of being purchased. One of the ways to do so is to offer the users "hot" products in the areas he is interested in. This has a lot of psychological power on users which tend to want what everyone else wants.

If Ice Cream is trending, you can mention that you make it. An athlete's agent will find it useful if their client is trending - especially when it is for the wrong  reasons.  A lot of the other trends are just noise.
