What does the term "full-stack programmer" mean?

I'd consider fullstack developers a little more than what is listed here. - They have a creative brain able to create digital experiences, skilled in HTML5, CSS3, Javascript. - And a logical one, skilled in Ruby on Rails or PHP. - And a crazy propensity for detail with skills in database technologies like MySQL, NoSQL, Hadoop. Because of this, full stack developers are often good solutions architects, able to look across the entire stack of technologies to develop great usable, solid, scalable web applications. They are rare, if you find one do anything you can do to hold on to them.

I always think of "full stack" as "fool's tactic".  It's the Jack-of-All-Trades and Master-of-None syndrome.  It's like expecting a spoken language translator to be proficient in 20 human languages, while always being accurate, so it's a foolish tactic to make it a goal either as an employee or as an employer.  Most companies asking for a "full stack developer" are usually tiny startups or IT teams with a tiny budgets, who don't care for quality as much as they do quantity.      If you saw the movie "Saving Private Ryan", the language translator specialized in a few areas.  If he had been a "full stack" translator, Ryan would be dead.

Is there a language available or under development that is C “flavored” (syntax similar to PHP, C# or Javascipt) that consolidates both the server and client side of web applications for commercial web development? We all saw the definition of full “stack programmers” on Quora, et al. What about a “full stack language” that really works?

Full stack generally refers to engineers doing both server side (back end) and web (Front end ) work... so not just an engineer doing almost all server side or front end.

A fullstack developer can take up a single handed prototyping and production worthy release of tech stack for a web app. From defining database, server components, deployment and all that is needed on the client side. A full stack developer of that skill is really rare and is would be a costly one to get to work for you. They can be excellent co-founders though for a business guy. A full-stack web developer is someone who has honed skills in both front-end web design/development and back-end/server coding.
