What's the best VPN service for streaming video?

  • I travel a lot and want to keep up with my shows from my home subscriptions. If I use a US-based VPN, I should be able to get around the international issues. Short of running my own VPN on EC2, are any of the VPN-as-a-Service offerings worthwhile for streaming video?

    While I suspect that this is largely a "your mileage may vary" type of question/answer, will share that I have largely had success with streaming audio and SD video via https://www.astrill.com/. Like many of the services, can pick your protocol, run on computer/mobile/router, add additional simultaneous connections (extra fee) and select the country/region of your gateway. This last one is useful when you want to pretend you're in the UK and stream "How to Cook Like Heston" from Channel 4. Believe they have both month-by-month and yearly subscriptions now. From my experience, the results are largely a function of your connection quality - if it's good with low latency/jitter you'll have little-to-no issues but if it's not then as mentioned, YMMV.

All of the free services and many of the paid services will generally be too slow for streaming video and if they do it is often very low quality.  I would suggest looking into the https://www.worldofvpn.com/ offered by World of VPN, as I have found that it works REALLY well for streaming Netflix and other HD video such as Hulu, Youtube, etc.  These guys offer really fast and secure services, great tech support, and their pricing is cheap as well.  Most use their services for removing regional blocking and streaming HD video, so the services are designed around the specific requirements of doing so.

The first thing to note is that they are not interchangeable. If you can get away with using Smart DNS you probably do not "need" a VPN at all. VPN stands for virtual private network and that's what it is.  It's a second network on top of whatever network your physically on used to tunnel your traffic to a different place.  Smart DNS just gives you access to the true DNS database if it has been blocked or modified.  It's the same as using any other publicly available DNS server.If smart DNS works and you're streaming media use it. It's less complex and most likely faster and less latent because of fewer hops.  It's fairly easy to block access to smart DNS servers.  More sophisticated devices can modify the DNS responses returned a VPN connection can avoid this by simply bypassing the security devices on the network your traversing.
