What are my chances of getting admitted into MIT or Stanford for computer science?
-
I am from a low financial background (my dad is a farmer) from India. But I have an interest in computer programming. I have completed my diploma in computer science. I am currently in a degree course (direct 2nd year). But I want to go US for further education. MIT And Stanford are the best universities for the CS branch. I am confused about should I complete my degree here India or take a risk to get admitted in one of those universities. So those peoples from India and US who has given SAT exam or those who are in the USA please help me... Feeling bad to say:- I don't want to learn CS in India. 90% of Engineering Colleges are in Rural Areas of India where teaching and learning means rote learning. These are the environment where we learn programming: C/C++ : turbo C / Borland C++ 4.0 or something. Which is 16 bits. Java : Oldest JDK 1.4.0 or something. Java IDE : Notepad

Answer:
I question your assertion that MIT and Stanford are the best for CS. I went to MIT, and I did not find it the best for CS. I had to round myself out later. There's too heavy an emphasis on the engineering side than the mathematical side. Stanford is in some ways better but still not the best. I suggest that you consider widening your search. There are quite a few places I think have a healthier approach to CS than MIT or Stanford. The ones that come to mind are as follows: Carnegie-Mellon University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (or is it Urbana-Champaign these days?) I would also suggest that you learn some Python.

You can consider other places like Singapore (NTU or NUS) as well as Europe (EPFL, ETHZ, TU Munich, etc) and other Universities in US too. In fact, you should broaden your options, take the SAT (for bachelors)/ GRE (for masters or PhD), apply everywhere and then weigh your options and pick the best one. There are many Universities which are comparable to MIT or Stanford, so I think, you must consider which one offers you a better scholarship, affordable standard of living, etc...
