  At my college (I'm in community college) I can sign up for most courses online at home, but I prefer to go in to see the adviser because that's their job...to advise. They can tell you what you should take and so on. If you're planning on medical school, you can choose any major you want (even stuff like music...philosophy is a good choice IMO) you just have to do a "pre-med" track. You will talk to the adviser and they will get you set up. You will take courses like biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, etc. For different med schools the pre-reqs will be a little different but not too much...the pre-med classes at your college will probably align with the medical school that is in your state.
