  Where do you live? In australia you have to do an undergrad degree (biomedical science is the most ideal) and get about a 75-80% average mark over the course of your degree (not easy) Then you need to sit a test called the GAMSAT, a grueling med-school entrance exam, which usually runs once a year. You need above average marks. Then you need to sit an interview with the med school you are applying for. In australia you need to be in the top 2/3rds of the interviewees (easy if you are a decent person with good communication skills and the right motives) So we are 4 years from high school now Then you study medicine for 4 years. It is hard. Then you graduate, and become an intern - a very junior position at a hospital. The first stage where you get payed. We are now 9-10years from high school. Then you become a resident. Simplistically this is a guy that looks after the ward at night, and tries to sort out problems, but can call on experts (consultants) if needed. Now we are about 12 years from high school, and on roughly 3-4x the minimum wage, working 50-60hour weeks, with a poor social life Then you sit an entrence exam to a advanced training position - where you decide what kind of doctor you want to be. If you want to be a GP this will take 3 years. If you want to be a surgeon this can take up to 6 years. We are now 16-19 years from high-school. You are a consultant, earning very very good money, able to start your own business and do whatever you want.
