The volume of your enclosure depends on the specifications of the actual subwoofer. The older version of Alpine Type R's were rated to handle up to 500 watts RMS and a 1.7 Ft^3 ported enclosure (corresponsing to your external measurements) would be a good choice. A 3" diameter round port extending 8" into the enclosure would tune it to 33Hz, a fairly decent compromise between best sound quality and maximum SPL. Look up the specifications and recommended "ideal" enclosure for your sub either in the owners manual or online. Then buy (or construct) your enclosure to match. The enclosure "calculators" here should be helpful. http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp#rec As to the amp, a quality monoblock that outputs 500 watts RMS into the impedance the sub will present would be the best choice.
