Which search engine is better?

If I have a website listed in a Google CSE (Custom Search Engine), would the referral source report as Google or the domain on which the search engine is hosted?

  • I have a site (say, http://site.com) listed within a Google CSE hosted on a different domain (say, http://domain.com).  When someone searches and clicks on site from the search engine on domain, what is reported in Google Analytics as the referring source? The source is technically http://domain.com but will it appear as Google since the platform is their search engine?

  • Answer:

I would presume the source is going to be Google, since as you noted, you're really just displaying on your end their iframe. That said, once the SERP displays you might be able to make clicks on those a GA event. That would at least give you some feel for traffic. Bottom line, I'm not sure. A couple tests and you can find out, yes? In any case, great question. I'm curious about it now as well. Thanks for the A2A too.
