    Answer is: Only greed drives them. They cannot be bothered. Users, current accounts owners, especially Classic apparently, do not give them what they look for, i.e. more money. They thought it is a loss to maintain idle accounts, because that prevents new POTENTIAL people of becoming Yahoo users who then would turn to Google instead to get the ID they cannot have at Yahoo. See what I mean? Money.
