Is MS in Mechanical engineering good?

Is it easier to get accepted for MS in Industrial Engineering as compared to Electrical or mechanical engineering?

  • Please provide some information about the admissions into MS for Industrial Engineering in US. CMU,MIT are ranked much lower than many other institutes in the Industrial Engineering MS course.Does that mean one can get into MIT,CMU rather easily than these other schools e.g.GTech,Upenn,Stanford? can you provide data about acceptance rate,no of seats available (international students),etc?

  • Answer:

Possibly, but sometimes the name itself and a smaller program still makes it more difficult to be accepted.  In any case, why would you consider such disparate MS programs?  It's not undergrad: one generally doesn't switch between master's programs at the same school any easier than switching schools.  Also, one doesn't get a MS IE if you're going into EE. If you're out just to get the school's name on the resume, I will warn you now that it will polarize how people look at you. The people who don't know anything about the programs (most people) will value the name brand.  However, people at the top of your area will look at you negatively if you make a big deal about your school, and they're the ones most likely to control your hiring and career advancement.

MIT does not have a department of Industrial Engineering.  There is an intedisciplinary program in manufacturing and management, and a manufacturing engineering masters in Mech. E.
